A Helping Hand, Starbucks saves the day

Starbucks has stepped up to the plate as seeing the crisis that is transpiring for all the Coffee Farmers in South and Central America, in the month of August the coffee’s price reached a new low dipping at below $1 per pound for the first time since 2012 according to an article in Daily Coffee News by Roast Magazine. The crisis came in after many Coffee Farmers have walked out on their crops, leaving them to basically rot as they are simply not going to work under these conditions, they refuse to get paid peanuts.

So finally, their cries for help have been answered— “In an announcement released moments ago, Starbucks said the $20 million will be used for the temporary relief of price-impacted smallholder coffee farmers with whom the company does business, “until the coffee market self-corrects and rises above the cost of production.”

This news comes as a great and much needed relief, as majority of the coffee purchased does come from small farms in Central and South America, so when they are receiving this enormous helps, it helps companies like Starbucks and other Coffee chains in the United States. It is a win -win situation and it makes an even more pleasant experience going to Starbucks and purchasing my coffee there knowing that they are helping the families of the Coffee Farms that produce the coffee we all drink everyday.

  1. It’s great to see large corporations actually help listen to concerns of the people working in such poor conditions to get their products to consumers. Although this does seem like a bandaid on a much bigger problem hopefully it starts a trend of these companies taking care of the farmers and who are the real heart of their products.
