Nomadic Coffee a Northern-Californian based Coffee roaster is bringing not only a caffeine jolt to everyone’s morning but a pleasant surprise of literature. Every bag of their coffee includes a printed poem inside a smaller bag—creating the sensation of not only a surprise but of a gift. Imagine opening your bag of coffee and to your surprise a small present of poetry is also there. As we live in a world where everything is rushed, there is no time to breathe let alone read- specifically literary work, this is an innovative way to provide all these special moments at the same time. It forces you to take time and contemplate these moments of slowing down, reading and also letting the poem set your day, it really eases the mood of chaos as it brings you for at least a small second to another time or place.

The poets and editors receive a paycheck for their literary work, as stated from Daily News Coffee of Nomadic:

“We pay the poets, and we pay the editors. I started out paying $20, then we got to $100 a poem,” said Landry, who is considering hiring a grant writer to help support the program. “Poets are rarely compensated for their work. I’ve gotten so many emails from poets saying, ‘Oh my god, this is the absolute first time I’ve ever been paid for my work, and I really appreciate it.’ We’ve paid out thousands and thousands of dollars to poets… I want to keep doing that, and I want to raise the stakes with it.”

When I read this I saw the nobility not only of the team of Nomadic Coffee but the nobility of these poems and artists that are grateful for everything they receive, not expecting to get compensated but so gracious when they actually do. The heart of a writer, poet and artist is truly one that is selfless. Giving without expecting anything in return.

I love how this Coffee Roaster is making a difference not only in the lives of the customers that receive the poetry in the mornings creating a surprising experience, but also creating a sense of community within their local writers, poets and artists.
