Some time in March this year, a story surfaced regarding the safety of Coffee and shook up my world a little bit as I along millions of people enjoy a cup of joe once or several times a day. This brought on quite the frenzy in California as a judge there determined that in fact Coffee companies should have labels or post a sign stating that the chemical ‘acrylamide’ which is produced or released during the process of roasting is present in coffee. A lawsuit was raised by several groups and it has been an ongoing battle, according to the Associated Press News:
The Council for Education and Research on Toxics, a nonprofit group, sued Starbucks and 90 other companies under a state law that requires warnings on a wide range of chemicals that can cause cancer. One is acrylamide, a carcinogen present in coffee.
The lawsuit has been brewing for several years as there has been so many research studies claiming otherwise. This is where the dilemma comes in, as for many years we have been reading and hearing that coffee actually is good for your health (music to my ears), that coffee actually has many antioxidants and get this it actually reduces the risk for cancers- do you see the predicament here? there are two sides of the coin stating passionately that coffee actually good for your health. But at the same time the process of roasting the coffee may emit a chemical ingredient ‘acrylamide’ (a carcinogen)- I have a feeling this battle may be ongoing for a very long time as many people not only love their Coffee but also have an addiction to it, so even if there would come a time where there may be warning labels on your coffee shop or cups, would that really stop you from sipping away?

Thanks for your post Maria. Coffee’s good, eggs are bad, meat is good, meat is bad. Basically everything that occurs once you are born causes cancer. If you took a time line of a human life and extended it to say 200 years old, by that point such a person would probably have cancer in every organ of their body. Imagine my skin from the sun after 160 years of abuse. Yikes. It is good to know that certain brewing techniques might cause different chemicals to spike in the beverage. I remember my dad drinking hot coffee from styrofoam cups, and I can tell you, that wasn’t good! So, in my unprofessional opinion, everything in moderation except suffering.
