As a coffee lover, addict, advocate and woman when I stumbled across this story in Daily Coffee News I was happy and excited to find out more what it was all about. In London there is a growing passion and effort to have women create more coffee based industries such all women networks, roasters and coffeehouses. The all girl focused network is called The Kore Directive which I love the play on words for Kore as Core we all know is the central or most important part of something/someone. The group is all about empowering women and sharing their knowledge of the specialty coffee industry that exists, the founder of the organization Ms. Burgess-Yeo she wants to bring the gap that still exists in the industry (specifically in the Coffee industry).
“Drawing inspiration from well-known coffee-based initiatives, social enterprises, and companies that openly champion gender and social equity such as Barista Connect, Well Grounded, and Girls Who Grind Coffee, among others, we aim to replicate a similar space and rapport within London for female pioneers within the industry,” said Burgess-Yeo. “We also want to demonstrate that there are a variety of roles and responsibilities that are available in coffee, both on and off the bar, and along the supply chain.”
The elements that The Kore Directive is bringing to the coffee-table (get it? 🙂 is to create a community of like minded individuals (women that love coffee and have the entrepreneurial spirit) who are passionate about learning more and wanting to network. The organization is looking to host events that will provide a platform for networking and create conversation among business and aspiring business owners.
One is a series of casual networking events that will provide an opportunity for dialogue, with panel discussions, guest speakers, and coffee cuppings. The other aspect is a collaboration with The Roastery at Tate, where practical workshops will be held for women. For the debut season, the workshops will focus on the ins-and-outs of production roasting.
I would love to attend one of these events because one of my dreams-is to one day at some point in my life to be a Coffee entrepreneur whether that may be as an Coffee house owner or working with a Roaster, or traveling to different countries and being involved with the initial processing. There are so many opportunities the Coffee industry has brought and keeps bringing, really the possibilities are endless and I admire how passionate this organization is, it is truly inspiring and makes me want to research more organizations here in my hometown so I can attend and possibly bring my own experience to the Coffee table :p
